#MeToo

David Schwimmer is a well-known American actor who played characters like Ross from “Friends” to Melman in the “Madagascar” movies. But what a lot of people didn’t know is that Schwimmer is also an executive producer for the anti-harassment videos done by the “That’s Harassment” campaign.

Recently, in the last 72 hours, Schwimmer has come out and written an essay to NBC news about the campaign.

“I want to change things,” Schwimmer said. “I grew up with stories of sexual harassment from my mother.” Schwimmer also said that he didn’t want his daughter to go through what his mother did.

Sexual harassment is a problem that people need to realize isn’t a brush-off-the-shoulder kind of problem. It’s something that can happen when we least expect and from the people we love and cherish the most. In the recent years, there has been stories on the news almost every other day about adults harassing their own children or it could be a famous person that was found guilty almost a decade after the incident(s) occurred.

A poll that was conducted by Washington Post when the “MeToo” hashtag went viral recorded that 54 percent of women experienced some form of sexual harassment in their lifetime. However, sexual harassment doesn’t only happen to females, but to males as well. It is stated that fewer females are accused of harassment because some males don’t understand that harassment can happen to anyone so they simply don’t report it. Since 1998 alone, 2.78 million men reported that they have been a victim of attempted or completed rape.

The #MeToo movement was created in 2006 by Tarana Burke, and it was founded to encourage people to speak out about their experiences of sexual violence. Since it first started, the movement has spread worldwide. More and more men and women realize that they are not alone, and are coming out to speak about their stories, and that is exactly what is needed to help stop sexual violence from happening.
