Four scary movies to watch that aren’t rated R

The Woman in Black– rated PG-13

Daniel Radcliffe plays Arthur Kipps, a grieving solicitor who is struggling to keep his job, in this 2012 film. As his last chance to save his job, Kipps travels to a village called Crythin Gifford to examine the documentation of the Eel Marsh House. Although Kipps is advised to return to London, he stays and soon finds out the Eel Marsh House is haunted by a woman in black. The creepy imagery and handful of jump scares works together to give you the scare you’re looking for.

Insidious– rated PG-13

Watch it on: Amazon Prime (free) or Vudu ($2.99)

Made in 2010, this thriller keeps you on the edge of your seat with a creep musical score and jump scares that make you never want to leave your house. The movie follows a family searching for a way to save their son, Dalton, who fell into a coma. During this journey, the family encounters paranormal activity that creates a suspenseful and intense atmosphere.

The Ring– rated rated PG-13

Watch it on: Amazon Prime (free), Pluto TV (free) or Crackle (free)

Starring Naomi Watts, this 2002 film is disturbingly creepy and leaves you scared that you may be the next victim. The Ring is the American take on the Japanese film Ringu. This movie is about a journalist, Rachel Keller, who is investigating the death of four teenagers who were supposedly killed by a videotape. The legend of the tape is that anyone who watches it will die after seven days. Keller races against the clock to save her and her son’s life from the extreme effects of the mysterious tape. The story line and overall movie is perfect for anyone looking for a suspenseful movie.

Poltergeist– rated PG

Watch it on: Netflix (free), Amazon Prime ($3.99), or Vudu($3,99)

This classic made in 1982 is perfect for anyone looking for a “thriller” or “horror” movie that isn’t too scary. While the movie is packed with explosions, monsters and paranormal activity, it isn’t exceptionally scary and looks outdated compared to some of the newer horror movies.  That being said, this is still a good movie that is more family-friendly than other horror movies. The story line follows a family who is visited by ghosts. At first these supposedly friendly ghosts entertain the family, but things quickly turn south when they start to terrorize them. Don’t watch if you are critical of special effects or want a scary movie that will keep you up all night.
