Emotions run high as the football Jays huddle up for the final singing of the school song after their game Friday, Nov. 5. “My favorite memory was singing the school song on the track with all my friends right next to me for the last time,” senior student section leader Ingrid Figas said. Washington fell 49-6 against Helias Catholic in the second round of district play.

On Friday evening November 5, 2021, the Washington High School Blue Jays fought in their last battle on the football field this season. While underclassmen get the chance to play once again next year, the seniors do not get that opportunity. Not only are the players affected by this, but so are their fans and everyone else that makes up the Friday Night Lights experience.

“The last game was super exciting because even though we were losing, everyone’s spirits were still up and it was cool to see everyone cheer for the boys so hard regardless of the loss,” senior cheerleader Lydia Maune said.

The Jays played hard, but unfortunately were not able to take home the win. This led to the end of the season for all; including the ones on the sidelines always cheering them on.

“When the game was over, it was super upsetting to realize that it was my last high school football game ever,” Maune said.

Although the season is over, the students will have long lasting memories to take with them.

“My favorite memory was singing the school song on the track with all my friends right next to me for the last time,” senior student section leader Ingrid Figas said. “I will miss the atmosphere of Friday night lights and all the fun memories that came with it.”

This year’s school spirit really showed through. With the help of The Flock, a great number of students came to each game creating a fun environment for many, even those not directly in the student section.

“My favorite memories are cheering back and forth with the student section and seeing all of the amazing school spirit we had this year,” Maune said.

After an amazing year filled with great memories, school spirit and a lot of emotion, some things have to come to an end.

“I was really sad when the game was over, but all great things come to an end,” Figas said. “I was so proud of the team for all their dedication and hard work throughout this season.”
