With high school coming to an end for seniors, a lot has happened in pop culture since freshman year. Music has had influential masterpieces created that deserve some reflection over the last four years. Oftentime, our car speakers would be playing some of the most popular music from these albums that will be remembered for the rest of our lives. 

2018

Scorpion – Drake

Released the summer before seniors were freshman, songs like “God’s Plan” were being played from all of our headphones. Drake’s hit album was highlighted by hype songs like “Nonstop” and more relaxed songs “Nice for What” and “In My Feelings.” This influential album demonstrated versatility that has become timeless and iconic. 

2019

When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go? – Billie Eilish

In the spring of freshman year, seniors were introduced to the unavoidable voice of Billie Eilish breakout album “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” The popular and critically acclaimed song “Bad Guy” was the song of the year according to many sources including the Grammy Awards.

Igor – Tyler the Creator

When the second semester finals were approaching, Tyler the Creator released his work of art titled “Igor.” In a unique and experimental style, the album struck positive reviews ever since its release. “Earfquake” and “Gone, Gone / Thank You” were a few of the standouts that were played repeatedly throughout that summer by music fans. 

Fine Line – Harry Styles

For the Christmas season in the class of 2022’s sophomore year, former One Direction member Harry Styles released his second studio album “Fine Line.” Headlined by “Watermelon Sugar” and “Adore You,” Styles created a hit album that was played heavily throughout the last few years. 

2020

After Hours – The Weeknd

With a memorable buildup to the album, “After Hours” by the Weeknd became a trendsetting embodiment of 80’s style dance pop in modern times. “Blinding Lights” was a record breaking song that has been a staple in music ever since it was released. Other hits include “Save Your Tears” and “Heartless” that were blasting through speakers around the world. 

Future Nostalgia – Dua Lipa

“Levitating” and “Don’t Start Now” were dominating the charts in 2020 as COVID lockdown began. Dua Lipa’s “Future Nostalgia” helped build upon the Weeknd’s revitalization of the 80’s style. This album became a classic during the age of isolation. 

2021

Sour – Olivia Rodrigo

After hearing “drivers license” all over TikTok, it was instantly understood that Olivia Rodrigo was the next breakout Disney music star. With “good 4 u” being another standout single, the album “Sour” became filled with all time hits.  

Donda – Kanye West

Dedicated to his late mother, Kanye West didn’t fail to impress as he brought out big stars in the music industry like the Weeknd, Jay Z, and countless others. This work of art consisted of “Hurricane” and “Jail” that have been on playlists around the world on repeat. This album will be remembered for the continued procrastination of the release date and the quality of work it consisted of. 

2022

Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers – Kendrick Lamar

Even though it was released just a few weeks ago, Kendrick Lamar came back like he never left. After not releasing music for the past 5 years, “Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers” was an introspective reflection on Kendrick Lamar’s life. A lot has happened since the release of his previous works, and this album serves as a reminder of how much time flies.
