Sept. 25 marked the end of MLB player Jose Fernandez’s life. After asking many of his teammates and friends, Fernandez realized no one was going to join him during a night out—in fact, some even tried to persuade him not to go.

Sometime between when he left the Marlins Clubhouse and got to Cocoplum Yacht Club, his mood seemed to fall. Through a text to Eduardo Rivero, one of his friends, his mood was noticed. Fernandez got into an argument with his girlfriend and wanted to go out to destress.

At some point throughout the night, Fernandez and Rivero stopped at a waterfront pub and called their friend Emilio Macias. Eventually, the three went back to the boat, and around 3:20 a.m., tragedy struck Miami. By 4 a.m., divers had recovered all three bodies. Two hours later, phones were ringing everywhere with news of the accident. Teammates, friends and family were devastated. Players and friends regretted telling Fernandez no that night. They thought maybe if they went something may have been different. Although the team was devastated, they continued playing in Fernandez’s honor.

My message to you: Don’t take time with the people you love for granted. If they seem upset, don’t let them go do something crazy. Talk to them, figure out what’s wrong and see if you can help. Rivero and Macias both knew Fernandez was upset that night, but let him drink and then drive a boat. They were all putting themselves in danger. Cherish every moment with your loved ones because you never know when that final word is going to be. For some people their last word to Fernandez was “No.” Don’t let “No” be your final word to someone.
