Halloween Magma Cookies
Spooky season is upon us, and there’s no better way to celebrate than with some delicious baked goods! Along with the traditional candy, pumpkin pie, and caramel apples, these magma cookies can make a simple addition to your festivities. Their dark exterior hides an interior full of bright color, and are sure to be welcomed by all of your friends. For these cookies, you can use any recipe and just split the dough up and dye it how you want at the end, but this recipe is from Brown Eyed Baker.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups + 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 12 tbsp (1 ½ sticks) unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup light or dark brown sugar
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 egg yolk
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1½ cups semisweet chocolate chips
- Food coloring- black, green, red, purple (or other colors of your choice)
- Whisk the flour, salt, and baking soda together in a bowl and set aside.
- Cream butter and sugar together until light in an electric mixer. Once they’re combined, add in the egg, egg yolk, and vanilla extract one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Reduce the mixer speed to low and beat in the bowl of dry ingredients until just combined. Stir in the chocolate chips with a rubber spatula.
- Divide the dough into halves, then divide one of those halves into thirds. You should have 4 sections of dough total, with one being much bigger than the rest.
- Dye the large half section of dough black with food coloring. Dye the thirds green, red and purple. If you have liquid food coloring, be careful as too much can change the consistency of your dough. If you have gel food coloring, using a toothpick can help to control the amount you put into your dough. Make sure to mix the food coloring in evenly, and if you want to avoid dyeing your hands and counter, wear latex gloves to stay clean.
- Divide the black dough into 16 even balls. Divide the orange, red and purple dough into 4 or 5 balls each. You should have 32 dough balls total.
- Flatten the black dough balls into discs and put a colored ball on top. Then, wrap the black dough around and close it up by pinching the edges so you can’t really see the colored dough.
- Place your dough balls onto cookie sheets with parchment paper (I usually do 12 cookies per sheet, as this recipe makes large cookies), then bake for 15 to 18 minutes at 325°. Halfway through baking, turn the cookie sheet around, so that it bakes evenly. You can also flatten the cookies with a spatula to encourage cracking.
Once your batches are out of the oven and cooled, they’re ready to eat. Now you have a wonderfully spooky treat. Enjoy!
