School tradition usually follows that with every school activity there is a theme and that theme is followed through a certain dress code. Take for example, at every Washington High School event there is a student section of a select few that are passionate about the theme chosen. Last football game was a beach party themed that The Flock designed and represented themselves. People find comradery and school spirit by following these unwritten rules of dress-code. It’s a fun way to be unique and match with everyone at the same time. However, some people feel with school dances, the theme doesn’t correlate with what they choose to wear. Most decide what they want to wear long before the theme is ever announced.
“ A lot of girls have already bought dresses during the week that the theme was announced,” a member of Leadership, Junior Alina Hayden said.
People usually look for their outfit long before they even have a clue what the theme is.
“I usually pick what to wear two or three weeks before homecoming and I genuinely go with whatever catches my eyes for the outfit instead of following the schools theme.” Senior Destiny Pulliam Said, “And overall I’m always happy with the schools theme, so I’m definitely happy with this years theme as well.”
Even though some people don’t follow the theme thoroughly for a dress code, they appreciate that spirit week is always similar to the theme for the dance itself.
“Themes are meant for spirit week more han the dance.” Hayden said, “Spirit Days are important because it’s where the whole student body can participate and show school spirit,”
While some individuals enthusiastically embrace the concept of dressing up and actively participating, the majority tend to not invest much time in it.
“I don’t really care about themes, I like to stick to my own style and pick what fits my mood for the day.” Senior Kai Dickerhoof said, “The themes never interest me, maybe I would participate if they were articulated to my aesthetic.”
It’s hard to be so diverse that everyone is pleased, yet the Leadership crew works hard to try their best to make sure everyone finds a piece of satisfaction from homecoming.
“When I pick what I am going to wear to homecoming the theme may affect my decision slightly, but not entirely.” Senior Abbi Brown said, “I like to pick what I’d like to wear based on what I like the most and what I feel the most comfortable in.”
Homecoming encompasses more than just following a dress code, it involves decoration and meticulous planning, resulting in a fun event.
“Most of the time we want it to be the decorations, not how others will dress. It just usually boils down to the amount of time to advertise theme and buying outfits.” Hayden said, “The goal is just to make it fun and engaging. For quality of decorations and activities it will all depend on money, but money is not a huge part of it all.”
Planning must be thorough, choosing a theme is a small but important part for decoration. A lot of budgeting and approval has to be done before homecoming can have another successful year. The Leadership students strive for nothing but approval from the majority of us and are the faces behind a great event every year.
“Homecoming is successful because of the inclusion and spirit.” Hayden said.
