It seems that every month, some fast food chain has a grand new idea that often ends in a flop. From new and experimental items, to mirroring the gimmicks of their competitors, to the rise of automation and AI in ordering, fast food chains are constantly testing the waters with new ideas. McDonalds, one of the biggest names in the fast food industry, is no stranger to this, putting the experimental – and profitable – limited time Grimace shake on their menu back in the summer of 2023.
McDonalds’ has followed up this idea, with an even more experimental one – a chain of speedy, drink-based restaurants called CosMc’s.
“CosMc’s menu is rooted in beverage exploration, with bold and unexpected flavor combinations, vibrant colors and functional boosts,” McDonalds’ stated in their corporate post about the chain.
The drinks on their website are certainly vibrant and unexpected, to say the least.
“TROPICAL SPICEADE™. A fiery blend of lemonade and tropical flavors topped with an interstellar cascade of dragon fruit,”stated CosMc’s website.
Tropical Spiceade isn’t the only one of these strange drinks. Sour Cherry Energy Burst, a caffeinated cherry slushy with fruity boba; Churro Cold Brew Frappe, a Frappe with cinnamon and Churro flavored syrup; and an Iced Turmeric Spiced Latte, which is exactly what it sounds like, are just a few of the odd and wacky beverages that CosMc’s will have for sale.
“At CosMc’s, we’re exploring how we might solve the 3pm slump by lifting humans up with every sip,” stated McDonalds.
Observant readers may notice that this is remarkably similar to the role that Starbucks fills – a quick boost of energy toward the end of the day to keep you going. This is likely intentional, as McDonalds has yet to tap into the fast drink market, one currently dominated by companies like Starbucks.
“It’s a huge market for sure,” McDonald’s Chief Executive stated about the fast drink market to the Wall Street Journal.
Regardless of whether CosMc’s will actually pose a threat to Starbucks, it is an interesting venture by McDonalds that should certainly be watched out for.
“Inspired by nostalgia and powered by a menu of bold, refreshing beverages and tasty treats, CosMc’s is landing earthside for us humans to enjoy.” Stated McDonalds.
