As many people know, this past month was Breast Cancer Awareness month. In this year alone, nearly 270,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States. This October, WHS wanted to do something to help those who are affected by this terrible sickness. History teacher Ben Strauser and his students decided to make T-shirts to benefit this cause and for people to wear at the pink out football game.

“The grand total [raised from the t-shirts and all other Pink Out items sold at the game] was just under $5,200,” Strauser said.

The money that was raised went to breast cancer research. 

“The amount of money we raised is somewhat overwhelming. I think that it’s really cool, and I give most of the credit to the students,” Strauser said.

Strauser’s students weren’t the only ones to recognize breast cancer in October, as the cheerleaders and football team took a moment to honor sophomore Ella Barton’s mother, who passed away from breast cancer. At the Pink Out football game, after the players ran out onto the field, they each placed roses at Barton’s feet in honor of her mother.

“I was amazed,” Barton said. “It just showed that everyone is there and it’s not like I’m going through it by myself.”
