Getting involved is one of the most important aspects of high school

Getting involved, especially for underclassmen, can be one of the most beneficial and fulfilling opportunities in their high school experience. Other than filling up a resume for college, getting involved can help students make connections and have fun in the process. No matter which route you take on your journey to get involved, it will be a great decision.

A very common way students get involved is trying out for a sport. Whether it is an upcoming spring sport this year or a fall or winter sport next year, it is never too late to start. Many students will find their best friends in a sport as well. From staying in shape to performing your passion in front of the school audience, a sport can help benefit and enrich your high school journey.

If you aren’t into athletics but want to show your skills to the school, you could join the Theatre Guild. Students who have an interest in acting can express themselves by trying out for an upcoming play. Those wanting to start to or continue to learn about a foreign language and culture can join the clubs offered at our school for Spanish, French and German. To join, it is not necessary to be in a class for those languages. This is a great way for students to learn of another culture that may interest them.

Washington High School offers three classes that teach journalism in different ways. There are the Advocate, Yearbook, and Blue Jay Journal that allow for students to learn about journalism in different forms. Applications will be available soon for admission into the classes next year.

Those wanting to strengthen leadership skills and have a voice in school decisions, Student Council and Leadership class would be a great opportunity to get involved. This is a great way to boost your college applications, along with the volunteering-based clubs like National Honor Society, Key Club and Interact. The ability to volunteer and lead others can be not only self-fulfilling, but beneficial to the local and global communities as well.

No matter what club, class, organization, or athletic activity you are interested in, the best way of going about joining is to contact the advisers or to keep a lookout of when the next meeting or tryouts will be. Though some clubs require an application and acceptance to join, it is still beneficial to look into to see if you qualify. You will not know if you like an activity or not unless you actually try it.
