Fall has begun, which means it’s time for cozy sweaters, Gilmore Girls, nice candles and warm baked goods. I tried a few of the seasonal treats that Washington has to offer.
First, the “Pumpkin Cookie” from Panera. This large sugar cookie, decorated in the shape of a pumpkin, of course, is a staple in my fall study sessions. There is enough to be satisfied with just one, and the slight lemon flavor in the icing balances out the sweetness of the cookie very nicely. I would definitely enjoy this with a nice iced coffee while crying over my math homework.
The next baked good I tried was Target’s “Favorite Day Bakery- Mini Cinnamon Rolls.” Cinnamon rolls are enjoyed year round, but I appreciate them most during the fall. Target has taken the classic treat and “mini-fied” it, something I didn’t expect for cinnamon rolls. They’re honestly pretty good. As good as mass-produced mini cinnamon rolls can be. They’re a bit dry, as they don’t come with any icing, but are not lacking in cinnamon and fall vibes. I would like these as a quick breakfast on a chilly fall morning, á la “Little Bites.”
I also sampled Pillsbury’s “Pumpkin Shape Sugar Cookie.” A nostalgic, easy-to-make desert. These bite-sized cookies can be enjoyed baked or in their dough form (my favorite), something that Pillbury proudly displays on the side of the box. The taste isn’t anything to write home (or in a newspaper) about, but the pumpkin stamps on the cookies and the fun eye mask on the box are. They remind me of Halloween when I was a kid, which is why I find myself purchasing these cookies every year without fail. These cookies are perfect for a Disney Channel Halloween movie marathon.
Finally, Schnucks’ Pumpkin Gooey Butter Cake. Sold in individual slices and whole cakes, this twist on a St. Louis original was a wonderful surprise during my search for fall treats. This cake is essentially a sweeter pumpkin pie with a gooey butter crust on top. This was by far my favorite fall-themed baked good that I tried. I never thought something like this would exist, but it was delicious. This would be perfect as a replacement for pumpkin pie for the low-effort Thanksgiving guest.
This fall, try some of the great treats that Washington has to offer.
