After nearly 64 years and over 43 movies Barbie has earned her place as the most well-recognized doll in the world. However, the 2023 film “Barbie” attempted to shed light on the negative image Barbie gives to young girls as well as present a feminist view on current-day issues. The movie generated many fans scoring 88% on “Rotten Tomatoes” and earning nearly $1.19 billion, but many argue its profound message may have been reduced to hundreds of brand deals and theaters full of pink.
A live-action Barbie adaptation was announced sometime in 2009, after many years of waiting and planning the full trailer was released on May 25, 2023. The film directed by actress and writer Greta Gerwig was released to the public Jul 21, 2023.
The “Barbie” movie tackled issues dealing with women feeling inferior to the doll, gender inequality in the workplace and identity crises people face regardless of gender. After watching “Barbie” 67% of viewers reported that they were more aware of workplace inequalities and gender discrimination in a study according to “Resume Builder”.
While the movie was followed by mostly positive reviews and grossed the most out of any movie in 2023, there were many negative reviews that followed as well. Some viewers interpreted the movie as anti-man or superficial and more focused on looks than a strong message.
“Barbie” was met with many different opinions, some valuing it as a strong feminist message that helps to bring attention to women’s issues, others believing the movie promoted a negative view of men. Regardless of the varying opinions the reach of “Barbie” is undeniable, the movie’s large fanbase and even larger gross lock in its spot as a modern-day cult classic movie.
