The stArt of the end
After seven seasons and 150 episodes, ABC’s teen hit “Pretty Little Liars” is only 10 episodes away from the series finale. Every Tuesday night since 2010, the five girls—Emily, Spencer, Alison, Aria and Hanna—have faced fires, kidnappings and murders. The hit show has brought multiple big names into the spotlight including Lucy Hale (Aria Montgomery), Shay Mitchell (Emily Fields) and Ashley Benson (Hanna Marin).
The show follows four best friends that are being harassed after their queen bee best friend, Alison DiLaurentis, goes missing and is found dead. The anonymous harasser goes by the name of “A” and slowly their threats become more intense season by season. The girls struggle with accepting the death of their best friend and all the twists and turns that result after finding her body. The “liars” have had multiple exchanges with danger and have provided an example of what a strong and healthy friendship looks like to teenagers and adults alike. After multiple red herrings, viewers are anxious to see what the “end game” will bring and find out all the loose ends watchers have had since season one.
However, many once avid watchers have stopped watching the series saying it “lost its magic”. Although great sitcoms like “The Office” and “Friends” have had over seven television seasons, it is difficult to keep the audience captivated on a murder mystery TV show for seven seasons, especially if the entire show is based around one mystery. The endless red herrings that keep being thrown at viewers every season have also drove viewers away. Hopefully, the final 10 episodes will recapture the excitement the first season brought and focus on the actual villain—not more red herrings.
“Playtime,” the name of the the mid-season premiere episode, should answer the cliff hangers that episode 10 left us on—did Toby survive, who is Spencer’s mother, will Caleb and Hanna stay together and what will happen to Ezra and Aria. Episode 11 of season seven will appear on April 18 on Tuesday night on Freeform.
