Washington Blue Jays take third place in the St. Francis Borgia High Schools Turkey Tournament
The Turkey Tournament has been a tradition throughout the years, known as the pre-tournament to every basketball season. This year’s lineup of the region’s hard to beat teams consisted of U-city, St Francis Borgia, Pacific, Union, Fort Zumwalt North, Metro, and Washington. The Blue started the tournament off strong winning their first game against union 64-52, which took them on to their chance at making the championship round, against Borgia. Going into the Borgia game “ we focused on [a strong] offense and playing to the best of our abilities against our crosstown rival.” said Senior Sam Paule. Washington started with a powerful offense ending the first half of the game with a ten point lead. However, during the second half the Jays fell by 29 pts to the Knights with the final score being 77- 48 sending Borgia to the championship game. “ We started pressuring Washington [defensively] to speed the game up, and [we] just need to hustle while working hard,” said Borgias Junior Adam Rickman. After Washington’s loss to Borgia, the Jays moved on to play for third place against Fort Zumwalt North. “We wanted to come out strong”, said Paule. “So we decided to dig deep and play to the best of our ability to bring home third place for Washington High School.” The Jays did just that beating Fort Zumwalt North by 27 points with the final score of 60-56 bringing home the third place trophy. “Putting in our best [effort] and growing as a team has helped us [prosper as a team],” said Senior Mark Hensely, “ Supporting each other and playing together brought us home [with the third place trophy].
